"Oh, not much of a detective, are we? What you have there, if you will look at the heading, is Sary Riverwymon's last known work address." Liz sat back, so pleased with herself you could almost hear a little round of applause.

"Where'd you get this? I thought you torched everything from that era."

"I did. You will not find one single copy of Sinister Wisdom on my shelves, nor a Frye boot in my closet. But Brooks, Brooks and Brooks has never torched anything in their illustrious career, and since they remember me fondly from my secretary and paralegal days, they were happy to send me copies of all my reference letters."

"Why in the world would Sary write a reference for you? You hadn't really," Alison glanced back at the letter, "worked in her business in a 'secretarial capacity', had you?"

"Oh, shit, no. I hadn't worked anywhere but Burger King and an occasional fill-in at the Velvet Hammer. We all did this kind of shit for each other all the time. If I recall correctly, I used Sary because she had a real job where she could use real letterhead stationary and was somebody who actually answered the phone with the company name instead of just saying, 'Dyke City'."

"You all were so cute," said Stacy. "I wish I had a video of the seventies."

"Well," said Alison who still occasionally put that particular salutation on the phone when the mood struck, "I wish I had a video of you last night."

"Did she behave really badly?" asked Liz with great relish.

"Really badly," Alison assured her.

"Oh, god," moaned Stacy. "I don't owe you an apology, do I?"

"You owe Michelle an apology. You owe me a forfeit."

"Oh, I'd rather be beaten than do either." Stacy tried to pull herself into a position that would show she wasn't the kind of girl who could be pushed around, but succeeded only in putting her elbow into Alison's cup of coffee.

"Well, don't count on that happening until you go through the social motions," said Alison, sliding into the next seat and leaving her to deal with the mess alone. "You can figure out what you need to do with regards to Dana by yourself."

"Dana?" Stacy groaned and put her head right down on the table in the coffee. Mr. Winkie hit with a plop that jarred their glasses. "That was the woman with the killer tequila, right?"

"I wondered how you got so loaded so quick on cheap wine."

"Did she behave badly, too?" Stacy brightened, obviously hoping bad behavior on the part of Dana would make her look better.

"She behaved impeccably." Alison enjoyed shooting that hope to shit. "All she did was cry. We expected that."

"Who was she, anyway?" Stacy asked, her head still on the table. "I'd like to get together with her again. What a party gal."

"She was the dead woman's ex."

"Oh, dear," said Stacy. "I did catch that—I'd just forgotten. Not that it necessarily narrows it down. I mean, Liz has so many ex lovers you can practically point at random into a crowd at any concert and hit one.
